Rising above North Vancouver, Grouse Mountain bills itself as the "Peak of Vancouver," and its proximity — about 15 minutes from downtown — makes it the city's most accessible mountain experience. The Grouse Mountain Skyride, a large aerial tramway, carries visitors from the base up to the alpine area, where the views over Vancouver, the harbor, the Gulf Islands, and on clear days far beyond are spectacular.
What's at the top depends on the season. In summer, the mountaintop is a hub of activity: the popular Lumberjack Show, a refuge for two resident grizzly bears, birds-of-prey demonstrations, mountain trails and chairlift rides higher up, ziplines, and a mountaintop restaurant. In winter, Grouse transforms into a ski and snowboard resort with runs for all levels, night skiing under the lights, snowshoeing, sleigh rides, and an outdoor ice rink — a full winter playground within sight of the city.
For the very fit, the Grouse Grind — a steep, relentless 2.5-km trail climbing the mountain's face, nicknamed "Mother Nature's Stairmaster" — is a free (and grueling) alternative to the gondola up (you pay for the Skyride down). Most visitors simply ride the Skyride both ways and enjoy the activities and views at the top. It pairs naturally with the nearby Capilano Suspension Bridge for a North Shore day. Plan a half-day; check seasonal hours and which activities are running.
What to Expect
Format
Ride the Skyride gondola to the alpine summit. In summer: lumberjack shows, grizzly bears, birds of prey, ziplines, trails, dining. In winter: skiing, snowshoeing, skating. About 15 min from downtown.
Best Time
Summer for the mountaintop activities and clear views; winter for skiing and snow play. Clear days give the best views — check the webcam/forecast, as the peak can be in cloud.
Duration
Half a day (3-4 hours) for the Skyride, views, and activities.
Tips
Check the weather and webcam before going — the summit can be socked in cloud, hiding the views. Bring layers; it's cooler up top. Confirm which seasonal activities are running. It's about 15 minutes from downtown (a free/shuttle or transit connection serves it). Pair with the Capilano Suspension Bridge nearby. The Grouse Grind hike is free but strenuous; you pay for the Skyride down.
